Biographical or Historical Data
The Newton Times was a prize-winning, liberal weekly newspaper which published in Newton, Massachusetts from 1971 to 1980. It was an alternative voice created by anti-war activists who weren't content with coverage of the issues by local newspapers. It served as a force in the community as it reported on social issues, analyzed city and public school budgets, assessed and endorsed political candidates and published a voters' guide before each election. It pushed for removal of asbestos in Newton North High School and raised awareness of Newton's distinctive neighborhoods. It was forced to close because of reduced advertising revenue taken by competing weeklies. The Newton Free Library has the Newton Times on microfilm (v. 1, #1, Sept. 8, 1971-v. 9, #22, Jan. 23, 1980), as well as 51 boxes of photographs from the newspaper's archive and a collection of mock-up maps used with articles. Collection includes business people, aldermen, politicians, city commissioners, mayors, picketing protest marchers, staff members of various city departments, construction workers, clowns, children at play, public auctions, high school prom attendees, Stanley Steamer Mountain Bus. Mayor Theodore D. Mann is shown campaigning, participating in proclamations, unveilings, press conferences, tree plantings and public hearings. Staff and administrators of various Newton city departments, boards and commissions are shown: Board of Assessors, Cultural Affairs Commission, Newton Youth Commission, Community Relations Commission, Recreation Department, Department of Mental Health, Sanitation Department. Businesses and organizations shown are: Newton Cooperative Bank, Silver Lake Dodge, Brae Burn Country Club, M.B.T.A., Newton Civil Defense Amateur Radio Operators, NAACP, United Way, Sons of Italy, LOPAC, Kiwanis Club. Social service/ mental health agencies or facilities shown are: Newton Multi Service Center, Juniper House, Alternative Home, Project Turnabout, CETA. Newton city events shown are: U.C. P. Walkathon, All America City banquet, Water Carnival, Springfest 1977. Miscellaneous photographs: Newton Catholic High School, Boyd Park, Bigelow House.
